An extraordinary new nightclub on the theme of magic called Pink Rabbit Black officially opens next Tuesday on Hollywood Boulevard, and it looks spectacular. The last company of the Houston Brothers (the twins behind La Descarga and many other themed bars) features a 40-seat theater, a Thai-Chinese dinner menu and lounge bar with traveling magicians, exotic variety shows (think swallowing the sword ) and burlesque dancers. The club was custom built with venues that could suddenly come to life during performances.
The rooms are filled with tributes to 19th century magicians and nestled in a century-old building. The flamboyant interior, dripping with gilding and velvet, may even remind you of the Magic Castle, less than a mile away. In a gesture of genius, the club secured the services of the castle’s longtime favorite Rob zabrecky as a show director and occasional performer. Charles Addams could not have interpreted the role better. Zabrecky’s cadaverous pallor and his aura of foreboding create the gravity his haunting performance deserves. If you see his name on the bill, go straight to the boulevard.
Black Rabbit Rose will be open Tuesday through Saturday with paid shows ($ 25 to $ 40) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
